New Drug Applications, Medicines and Therapeutic Committees - a guide for new consultants, SpRs and GP Registrars
 

M&TCs can be a daunting prospect for newly qualified consultants. This course is designed to take SpRs and newly qualified consultants through the process of new drug appraisals and how new drugs should be introduced to the NHS. The roles of NICE, All Wales Medicines Strategy Group, Welsh Medicines Partnership and formulary application process for local prescribing committees and M&TCs will also be covered.

Aimed at general practitioners. This one day workshop will look at evidence based prescribing and the usefulness of information provided by clinical trials. We will also cover common errors in describing risk and benefit, as well as the influence of the pharmaceutical industry and the media on prescribing.



Providing sound advice
 

Aimed at primary and secondary healthcare professionals. This one day course will provide the core skills in how to interpret the evidence base, how to differentiate good and poor quality information in order to provide a sound basis on when new evidence should be incorporated into clinical practice.



Clinical governance and prescribing
 

This half-day workshop will cover the risks associated with prescribing in particular repeat prescribing, monitoring and administration of drugs and primary/secondary care interface issues. We will also identify the more frequently reported errors with prescribing and suggest ways of reducing such errors.

This study day will focus on the therapeutics skills required for the junior doctors, using validated case studies, the course will focus on practical prescribing skills. Structured into four stages we will look at the process of rational treatment, selection of your own personal formulary, treating your patients and keeping up to date. The workshops are structured so that participants gain both practical and theoretical aspects of prescribing.

This workshop offers advice to individuals based within LHBs who have budget setting responsibilities. Facilitated by experinced finance and pharmacy personel this one day workshop will shed some light on the budget setting process.

This popular course takes a look at the medical and non-medical influences on prescribing decisions. The programme covers the impact that the pharmaceutical industry and the media can have on prescribing and also looks at the effectiveness of guidelines (NICE, AWMSG), academic detailing and implementation strategies.



Risk management and repeat prescribing
 

Suitable for receptionists from GP practices and ward clerks from hospitals. Recognising the crucial role, practice receptionist play in the repeat prescribing process this half-day course will cover essential good practice procedures for repeat prescribing systems in primary care.



Prescribing information systems - making sense of prescribing data, a practical guide
 

This half-day course is suitable for prescribing support teams, including pharmacy technicians, project facilitators and clinical govern governance support staff in both primary and secondary care. The programme will explore the limitations of prescribing data, using case studies and worked examples where appropriate.



How to use the BNF and other sources of prescribing information
 

Aimed at practice and hospital staff (eg receptionists and ward clerks) involved in the prescribing process. This one day course will cover the BNF and other sources of prescribing information.
