QALYs provide a common currency to assess the extent of benefits gained from a variety of interventions and take into account both quantity and quality of life generated. The basic idea is straightforward; it takes one year of perfect health to be worth one QALY.
To hear Professor Ceri Phillips explain the concept of QALYs and discuss some of their advantages and disadvantages, download or view this presentation which was recorded live during the WeMeReC Health Economics Seminar in October 2006.
